William S Smith, age 97, of Berwyn, Pennsylvania passed away on Thursday, June 13, 2024 at the Highgate at Paoli Pointe.

Bill was born in Port Royal, PA April 11, 1927. He graduated from the Patton School in Elizabethtown, PA in 1945 and Penn State University in 1950 where he majored in Hotel Administration. He worked for 34 years at Cigna in the claims department, retiring in 1988 and later as a consultant for the Insurance Management Group in Stamford, CT.

Bill was also a coach for Devon Strafford Little League throughout the 1960's and 1970's.

After retirement Bill became more active in the community, volunteering with Surrey Services for Seniors and he was the treasurer of his local AARP chapter, as well as being active in the UML Senior Group of the YMCA.

Bill was predeceased by his wife and traveling partner, Joan. Married in 1955 in Havertown, PA, together they travelled the world, finding adventures on nearly every continent. He loved his crossword puzzles, many word games, history - particularly Civil War, his beloved Phillies, Eagles, Nittany Lions and trips to Ocean City, NJ. Most of all he loved his family.

Bill was also predeceased by his parents, James Garfield and Anna Shelley Smith, and his son, Jeffrey S. Smith.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his son Bradley (Donna), Claudia (Daughter in-law), Grandson's Matthew (Yao Yao) and Gregory Smith.

A memorial gathering will begin on Tuesday, June 25, 2024 from 12:00pm to 1:00pm at Alleva Funeral Home, 1724 E. Lancaster Avenue, Paoli, PA 19301. A celebration of life will follow at 1:00pm in the chapel at Alleva. The celebration of life will continue in the Sajer Hall at Alleva Funeral Home following the service.
