George Montgomery was a resident of the Children's Homes from 1934 to 1937 and a 1940 graduate of Patton School
George Montgomery, 96, entered into rest on Tuesday January 2, 2018 at York Hospital. He was the husband of the late Dorothy E. (Ferrence) Montgomery to whom he was married for 65 years.
George was born May 4, 1921 in Philadelphia, the son of the late George Montgomery and Sarah Jane (Elliott) Montgomery. After his father died in 1932 he was raised at the Masonic Homes in Elizabethtown.
During World War II, he served in the 9th Army Infantry throughout France, Belgium and Germany. His unit assisted as artillery support for the Battle of the Bulge. George retired, after 42 years, as a machinist for American Chain and Cable Co. He was a faithful member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church teaching a Sunday school class for many years. He was a 75 year member of the Hiram Masonic Lodge No. 81 in Philadelphia and York Forest 30.
A viewing is scheduled for 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, January 13, 2018 at the John W. Keffer Funeral Home, 2114 W. Market St. in York. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. with his pastor, the Rev. Rick Smith, officiating. Burial will be private in Greenmount Cemetery.
George is survived by his daughter, Betsy Deveney and husband, Samuel; two grandchildren, Tristan M. Deveney of Paxton MA and Sean S. Deveney of Alexandria VA. He was preceded in death by his son, Michael E. Montgomery.
