On June 29, 2022, we said goodbye to Robert William McKenney Jr. (92), beloved husband, father, brother, father-in-law, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, and friend. Known for his dry wit and his ability to say what was on his mind, even when you hoped he wouldn’t. Bob was an extraordinary man that presented himself as ordinary.
Bob was born in Greensburg Pennsylvania along with his identical twin brother, William T. McKenney on June 12, 1930 to Robert W. McKenney and Lela (Dom) McKenney. Bob spent his childhood living around the Pittsburgh area and would often share memories of his days spent outdoors camping, bicycling, and shooting his BB gun. Bob and his brother graduated from the Thomas Ranken Patton Masonic Institution for Boys in Elizabethtown PA and remained connected to the school throughout his life. After high school both Bob and Bill enlisted in the US Navy where Bob was a proud Seabee, stationed in Guam during the Korean War.
Bob met the love of his life, Velma Trayter through mutual friends, they were married in Pittsburgh and remained inseparable until her passing in 2011. They began their life together in Pennsylvania however transitioned quickly to Orlando Florida to enjoy the warmer weather. They both retired from Martin Marietta after more than (30) years of service. Bob worked as a plant communications specialist transferring skills he acquired at Bell Telephone. Retirement led Bob to a move to Madison GA to be closer to grandchildren.
Above all else Bob would say his greatest accomplishment was his daughter Marile (Astary) McKenney who currently resides on Tybee Island GA. He was always there to support her and enjoy time with her wherever that led him including trips to Conyers GA and Montreal Quebec.
He is survived by his daughter, Marile (Bill) Astary of Tybee Island GA; two grandchildren, Garrett (Susan) Astary of Silver Spring MD, Allison (Chad) Taylor of Raleigh NC and three great grandchildren, Alexandria Astary, Audra Astary and Monroe Taylor.
A celebration of life will take place at AE Carter Funeral Home in Madison GA at a future date.
