George W. Bair, 91, a lifelong resident of Spring Run, passed away peacefully June 26, 2024, in the Orrstown Personal Care Home surrounded by his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, G. Bonita (Rosenberry) Bair.
Born January 11, 1933, in Spring Run, PA, he was the only child of the late George Carl and Clara E. (Hammond) Bair. As a youth he attended Spring Run schools and grades 10 through 12 he was a student at the Patton Masonic School for Boys in Elizabethtown, PA, where he played football and studied carpentry. He served in the US Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in December 1954. Following his service, he worked several years for SKF in Shippensburg. On April 21, 1957, he married Bonita and it was off to the races for the beginning of his entrepreneurship.
In 1959, George and Bonita built the Sunoco Gas and service station in Spring Run. In addition to being an excellent mechanic, he operated a towing business and sold used cars. In the mid 60's he started a Ski-Doo and Arctic Cat dealership, repairing and selling snowmobiles, as well as clothing and accessories and in later years added Carhartt clothing and a Kerosun dealership. George and Bonita also had a contract with the US Postal Service, delivering mail to the various post offices within their district.
George was a member of the Upper Path Valley Presbyterian Church, and for 70 years a member of the American Legion Post 232 and served with the Color Guard. He was also a member of Orrstown Lodge # 262 F.&A.M. for 69 years and a past president of the Fannett-Metal Fire Company, Dry Run, PA.
Known for his witty sense of humor, George often played mischievous tricks on friends and was dubbed "life of the party" in his heyday. He was one of the founding members of the Ridge Runners Snowmobile Club and enjoyed snowmobile racing, traveling as far as New York for the sport. His passion for racing spanned nearly 30 years, from snowmobiles, to motocross, to building the fastest "junkyard" stock car engines for the local dirt tracks. His family fondly recalls him as a "Jack of all trades," and in his free time he enjoyed attending car shows, boating at Raystown Lake, traveling out west and going dancing. In his life of various interests, he had many friendships. Spending time with his family, however, was at the top of the list.
Surviving with his wife, Bonita, are 4 children: Tamara Adams (Doug), Spring Run, Edwin Bair (Angie), Shippensburg, Shawn Yohn, Willow Hill and Julie Fleagle (Danny), Shippensburg; 8 grandchildren, Carla Frehn, Brooke Fischer, Eric Bair, Dakota Bair, Kiefer Fleagle, Colton Bair, Chase Harrington, McKenna Bair, and 6 great grandchildren.
